Namibia has officially paid off $750 million in Eurobond debt in a single day, marking one of the most decisive sovereign repayment moves in Africa this year. The payment settles a Eurobond issued in 2015 and was financed through: 💼 $444M from a central-bank sinking fund 🏦 $306M from domestic banks With the repayment complete, Namibia’s foreign reserves dropped from N$54.7 billion to approximately N$47 billion — a significant decline but one seen as a strategic trade-off for long-term financial stability. Finance Minister Iipumbu Shiimi reaffirmed that 85% of Namibia’s total debt is domestic, reducing dependence on external markets. He also confirmed that the government has no plans to issue another Eurobond, signaling confidence in domestic financing and fiscal control. As global debt pressures intensify, Namibia’s move positions it as one of the few African governments actively reducing foreign debt exposure — not expanding it. A bold strategy: pay now, strengthen later. #AfriMetrics #Namibia #Africa #Debt #DebtFree
