As a 4.0 student at UofT, here are the 5 study habits that made the biggest difference for me.
You don’t need to study longer—you just need to study smarter.
1. Pavlov yourself.
Pair studying with something you genuinely enjoy. I only let myself get a matcha, watch my favorite show, or listen to a certain playlist when I was studying. Over time, my brain started associating studying with something positive instead of something I wanted to avoid.
2. Pretend you’re teaching it.
If you can’t explain a concept in simple terms without looking at your notes, you probably don’t understand it as well as you think. Teaching forces you to find the gaps in your understanding.
3. Test yourself before you start studying.
Before opening your notes, write down everything you already remember about the topic. You’ll quickly see what you know, what you’ve forgotten, and exactly where to focus your time.
4. Aim for 90%, not 100%.
University rewards consistency more than perfection. Chasing every last mark usually isn’t worth the extra time. Get to a point where you understand the material well, then move on.
5. Stop when you’re still motivated.
Don’t study until you’re completely burnt out. Ending a session while you still have a little energy makes it much easier to come back the next day and stay consistent.
