In 2021, NOAA scientists photographed a yellow Hertwigia sponge and a pink Chondraster starfish sitting side by side nearly 6,200 feet below the Atlantic Ocean, and the resemblance to SpongeBob and Patrick was impossible to ignore. The footage came from the research vessel Okeanos Explorer at Retriever Seamount, off the coast of New England.
